Fort Logan is a neighborhood of about 12,500 people in the southwest corner of Denver, south of Hampden Avenue around the grounds of the old Army post it is named for. Sheridan, Bow Mar and Littleton are all close by, so it has a quieter, more suburban feel than most of the city.
Fort Logan began as a frontier Army post in the late 1880s and was named for General John A. Logan, who helped establish Memorial Day. The fort closed in 1946. Part of its land became the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Fort Logan, which opened in 1961, and some of the original fort buildings still stand. The Field Officer’s Quarters is now a small museum.
Fort Logan National Cemetery
Fort Logan National Cemetery was established in 1950 on the west side of the old fort, and today it is one of the busiest national cemeteries in the country. Its rolling lawns and long views make it a place many neighbors walk for quiet reflection.
What the homes are like
Most homes are 1950s through 1970s ranches and split-levels on good-sized lots, many owned by longtime residents, including retired military families. Bear Creek Park and the Bear Creek Trail are along the north side, and Pinehurst Park and smaller neighborhood parks are spread through the area.
