Platt Park takes its name from James H. Platt Jr., a Colorado politician active in the 1880s, and from the park itself, which opened in 1899. The neighborhood started as part of South Denver, a separate town south of the original city limits, and was annexed to Denver in 1894. The Decker Branch Library, a Carnegie library built in 1913, still anchors the north end of the neighborhood and gives the area a genuine sense of history that newer Denver neighborhoods don’t have.
South Pearl Street is the reason most buyers end up here
South Pearl Street was built as a streetcar-era shopping strip, and it never really stopped being one. Jack’s, Duffeyroll Cafe and Kaos Pizzeria all sit within a few blocks of each other, and the Pearl Street Farmers Market runs on Sundays from June through October, one of the better-attended markets in the city. I send almost every buyer looking in this price range to walk South Pearl before they decide on a neighborhood, because it’s the kind of amenity that’s hard to picture from a listing photo.
The housing stock is mostly Craftsman bungalows from the 1900s through the 1920s, with pockets of newer duplexes and rowhomes filled in over the last two decades. Buyers who want walkability without downtown pricing land here often, and the Louisiana-Pearl light rail station sitting inside the neighborhood makes a car-free commute a real option, not just a selling point. Washington Park is a short walk east, and Old South Gaylord and the University of Denver campus are just as close to the west.
